[Timothy in bloom] You probably never paid any attention to the flowers on grass. Grasses do flower, although the flowers are so small you can hardly see them. Timothy (Phleum pratense), shown here, is actually rather colourful at this time of year, if you look really closely.

[Close-up of timothy blooms] Timothy is a favourite hay crop (usually harvested before it blooms), but it also grows wild all by itself in open spaces in many parts of the world.
